What a Shaft Actually Changes

This page exists because golfers keep asking us to explain the shaft wall, and because most of what is written about shafts online is either a brand advertisement or a spec chart with no context. Here is what the properties do, in the order they matter.

1. Weight

Total shaft weight is the property that changes the most for the most golfers. It affects tempo, it affects how heavy the head feels at the top of the swing, and it affects strike consistency more than any other single variable. Move a golfer twenty grams and the whole delivery changes.

Heavier shafts generally calm down a fast, aggressive transition. Lighter shafts help a golfer who is running out of speed to get the head through. Neither is better; they are answers to different problems.

2. Bend Profile

Where along its length a shaft is stiffer or softer determines how it behaves under load. A shaft that is soft near the tip tends to produce more launch and a little more spin. A shaft that is stiff near the tip does the opposite. The old “high kick point / low kick point” language is a rough approximation of this and it hides more than it reveals, because two shafts can share a kick point and behave nothing alike.

What we do in the shop is measure frequency at several points along the shaft rather than trusting the marketing description. It takes a few minutes and it is real data.

3. Flex, and Why the Letter Means Little

There is no industry standard behind the letters. One manufacturer's stiff can measure softer than another manufacturer's regular, and the same model can vary between production runs. The letter is a starting guess.

Frequency in cycles per minute is the measurable version, and even that only means something when compared within a consistent measuring setup. We use ours as a relative tool: it tells us whether the six iron and the seven iron in your set are in a sensible relationship, which is a question the letters cannot answer at all.

Do not buy flex on ego. The number of golfers playing one flex too stiff because a friend told them regular was for beginners is genuinely large, and it costs them launch, spin, and consistency all at once.

4. Torque

Torque describes resistance to twisting under load, measured in degrees. Lower numbers feel firmer and more stable; higher numbers feel smoother and can help a golfer who finds a stiff shaft harsh. It is a feel property far more than a performance one for most amateurs, and it should never be the first thing you fit.

It matters most in graphite iron shafts and in drivers for players with fast, aggressive releases.

5. Trimming and Installed Length

The same shaft model becomes a different shaft depending on how it is trimmed. Tip trimming stiffens the tip section; butt trimming stiffens the whole shaft slightly. Manufacturers publish trimming instructions and a lot of clubs are built without following them, which is one reason two supposedly identical clubs can play quite differently.

Every shaft that goes through our build room is trimmed to the published instruction and the finished length, frequency, and swingweight are recorded on the build log.

A shaft is only a specification once it has been cut. Before that it is a category.

What This Page Deliberately Does Not Do

It does not rank brands. Shaft performance is relative to the golfer holding it, and any list claiming a best driver shaft of the year is a list about marketing budgets. If you want to know which shaft suits you, the answer is on a launch monitor, not on a page.
