A Set Should Climb in Even Steps
The point of a matched set is predictability: each club goes a known amount further than the one below it. Plenty of bags fail that test badly — two clubs overlapping in the middle, a twenty-yard hole at the top, and a long iron nobody has hit successfully since 2019.
What Goes Wrong in a Set
- Loft creep. Modern seven irons are stronger than yesterday's six. That is fine on its own, but it compresses the top of the set and stretches the bottom.
- Mixed shafts. A replacement club ordered under warranty comes back with whatever was in stock. It looks identical and weighs eight grams different.
- Bent lies. Range mats and hardpan move lie angles over a couple of seasons, usually not by the same amount on every club.
- Distance ceiling. Above a certain loft, more loft stops producing more height and starts producing more spin. The long irons stop separating from each other.
All four are measurable in half an hour on the gauge table, which is where the iron session begins.
Head Style Before Shaft
We look at where you strike the face before discussing anything else. Impact tape across a set of shots tells us how much help the head needs to give you. A golfer who centres the face consistently can play a compact head and gain workability. A golfer scattering across three grooves needs mass out at the perimeter more than they need a clean topline.
This is not a handicap question. We have fitted single-digit players into wide-sole cavity backs and fifteen-handicaps into players' irons, because the strike pattern said so.

Length and Lie Are Cheap and Powerful
Static wrist-to-floor is a starting point and nothing more. What settles length is where the sole is contacting the turf under a real swing, and what settles lie is where the ball actually starts relative to the target line. Both are adjustments we can make to clubs you already own, in the building, on the day.
Order of operations matters here: set length first, then measure lie, because changing length changes the effective lie by roughly a degree per half inch.
A surprising share of iron sessions end without a purchase. Two degrees flat across the set and a half-inch trim on the long irons will fix a lot of what people came in to replace.
Shaft Weight, Not Shaft Brand
The number that changes ball flight most reliably in an iron shaft is total weight, followed by where that weight sits along the shaft. Flex labels are not standardised between manufacturers and mean less than the marketing implies. We test in weight bands — roughly ninety, one hundred, and one hundred twenty grams — and let the numbers pick the band before we look at any particular model.
Steel or graphite is a separate question, and it is mostly about how much vibration your hands and elbows want to absorb over a four-hour round. Plenty of golfers in their sixties gain more from a lighter graphite iron shaft than from any head change.
