A Bench, a Loft Gauge, and One Stubborn Idea
Gap Fit Golf started in 2009 in a rented service bay with a borrowed frequency meter and a hand-me-down loft-lie machine. The idea has not changed since: fit the distances a golfer is missing before fitting the club they came in asking about.
Where the Name Came From
The shop was almost called something else entirely. In the first year we kept a legal pad on the wall where we wrote down what each golfer actually walked in wanting versus what the numbers said they needed. By the end of that season the pad had one recurring entry, written over and over in different handwriting: gap. Not a swing fault, not a shaft mismatch — a hole in the set that nobody had ever measured for them.
We stopped arguing with the legal pad and named the place after it.
What Is Actually in the Building
Two hitting bays, both with a full-swing net and a doppler unit that reads carry, spin, and launch angle. A short-game mat with a real turf strip so wedge testing happens on something that fights back. A build room with a loft-lie gauge, a frequency meter, a swingweight scale, a shaft puller, and enough grip stock to finish most jobs the same afternoon.
| Station | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| Bay 4 | Full-swing testing, driver and long clubs, doppler capture |
| Bay 5 | Irons, wedges, turf-interaction work on the live strip |
| Gauge table | Loft, lie, length, and face-progression measurement |
| Build room | Pulling, re-shafting, tipping, gripping, swingweight matching |
| Putting strip | Eighteen feet of bentgrass-speed surface for stroke and lie work |
There is no showroom. There are no display racks of clubs you can buy off the wall. Everything in the building is either a measuring tool or a fitting component, which keeps the conversation honest.
How We Make Money, Stated Plainly
We charge for the session. If you order a club through us we build it and mark it up modestly, and the session fee comes off the top. If you take your spec sheet elsewhere and order the same club online, that is genuinely fine — you paid for the measurement and the measurement is yours.
What we do not do is take volume commitments from manufacturers. No brand pays for shelf space here because there is no shelf. That is the entire reason a fitting from us can honestly end with “bend the wedges you already own two degrees and buy nothing.”
Roughly one session in nine ends with no purchase at all. We treat that as the system working, not as a lost sale.
Who Comes Through the Door
The bulk of our work is mid-handicap golfers who play twenty to forty rounds a season on public courses around the metro. We also do a steady amount of junior sizing in the spring, senior re-shafting in the autumn, and a handful of full-set builds each year for golfers who have finally decided to stop patching.
We are not a tour-van operation and we do not pretend to be. If your ball speed is above 180 you will be better served somewhere with a wider shaft inventory, and we will say so on the phone rather than take your ninety minutes.
